LEOPARD Challenge 2024 – Celebrating PAICON’s Success

In the ever-evolving field of AI-driven healthcare, global competitions such as the LEOPARD Challenge play a pivotal role in advancing research and enhancing personalized diagnostics. Solutions developed in these challenges have contributed to valuable advancements, particularly in fields like cancer detection using medical images. The LEOPARD Challenge 2024, organized by Radboudumc and hosted on the Grand Challenge platform, is one such competition aimed at predicting biochemical recurrence in prostate cancer using AI-driven analysis of histopathological tissue sections.

PAICON team led by Dr. Witali Aswolinskiy took part in this global competition, which attracted hundreds of teams from around the world. We are proud to announce that our team achieved 2nd place in this prestigious challenge, placing PAICON among the leaders in the field of AI-based cancer diagnostics.

PAICON’s Solution: Fine-Tuning the Last Layer

Our innovative approach utilized Attention-Based Multiple Instance Learning (AB-MIL) with spatial cropping, combined with ensemble modeling techniques, to predict biochemical recurrence in prostate cancer. Our team implemented advanced deep learning models that processed entire slides during inference while utilizing spatial cropping during training to improve precision. To further enhance model performance, we fine-tuned the final layer using all available training data, improving model calibration and performance.

One of the most impressive aspects of our solution was its ability to generalize well across both public and private datasets, demonstrating strong stability and performance. The final submission involved a carefully crafted ensemble of models trained with multiple cross-validation splits, ensuring robustness and accuracy.

The success of our team highlights PAICON’s commitment to harnessing AI and machine learning to advance personalized cancer diagnostics. By consistently pushing the boundaries of medical AI, we aim to deliver impactful solutions for real-world healthcare challenges.
